And, for the first time, Manipal University has ventured into humanities with the starting of Manipal Centre for European studies in December 2009. According to the understanding between the two partners, EU will fund the project for two years with Rs 2 crores.

The university offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in various specialties. Among the institutes, KMC Manipal and Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal have completed 50 years of existence. The former started way back in 1953 and the latter in 1957.

The professional institutions were granted deemed university status in 1993 for their track record and academic excellence. As the emphasis is always on quality education, Manipal University’s degrees are recognized worldwide. Today, Manipal University has students representing 52 countries. Every year over 7000 students are admitted across all streams. It also has an active alumni base of over 72,000 students across the world.

With just five professional institutions at the start, the university has seen meteoric rise over the last sixteen years with diverse courses. This is a self-financing university with no support of grants from UGC or Government and with no capitation fee. The tuition fee for students is fixed on the recommendation of the Committee of Experts appointed in consultation with UGC.

Talk of the university’s research programs, it is one of the best in the country. Manipal University has always encouraged research by its faculty members and also provides incentives

With the objective of encouraging meritorious students and academic excellence, freeship and scholarships are offered for the deserving candidates. Candidates admitted to MBBS course within the first 500 ranks and BDS, BE, BPharm courses within the first 1000 ranks of the respective merit list of the entrance examination conducted by Manipal University are offered 100% freeship. Several scholarship schemes also offered for the meritorious students.

With the vast experience gained from producing thousands of graduates year after year, the splendid academic reputation, the seasoned faculty, the matchless academic and clinical facilities, Manipal University boasts of an education system nothing short of world class. The Manipal Group as a whole also operates 15 hospitals in India and abroad and 7 outreach healthcare centres. Today the Manipal Group has several campuses in India and abroad with international academic collaborations for twinning programs in medical and engineering with universities in the US, UK, Australia and other countries.
The Melaka-Manipal Medical College, Malaysia was initiated in 1994 with an agreement between the Manipal Education and Medical Group, India and the state government of Melaka, Malaysia. This came about because of the bilateral relationships between India and Malaysia. The prime ministers of the two countries signed a treaty to start the innovative medical twinning program. The facilities, needless to say, are world class.

The American University of Antigua College of Medicine (AUA) and MU have joined hands to provide one of the best educational experiences a medical student can have. The KMC International Center is established to conduct a twinning program with the AUA. This program will enable the candidates to prepare for the USMLE.

Talk of the university’s research programs, it is one of the best in the country. Manipal University has always encouraged research by its faculty members and also provides incentives. After getting the deemed university status in particular, research has received a tremendous boost. MIT has interdisciplinary labs constituted under the Innovation Centre, where several research programs in emerging areas such as Nanotechnology, Ad hoc wireless networks, nuclear engineering, VLSI design and Pattern recognition are being pursued. MCOPS already has eight patents to its credit and four more have been sent for approval. MLSC is another centre which will be the university’s pride in years to come.

Manipal University has the finest in infrastructure and facilities. The air-conditioned lecture halls for instance, the skills lab, the air-conditioned hostels, the multi-cuisine food court, the state-of-the-art health sciences library which can accommodate 1300 students are all marvels which the university can boast of.

The library has over 62,000 books and more than 600 journals. The facilities include Medline, Proquest medical library of online databases, audio visual, Cochrane library, e-learning, computer and Internet services. The Skills Lab and Anatomy Museum are amongst the best in the world.

Some of the other facilities like the Innovation Center - has served as a valuable ‘incubation center’ for industry and research. The state-of-the art innovation centre bridges the gap university and industries for the industrial academic research.

Sports facilities are common on campuses, but Manipal University has something altogether different. There are the normal gyms, swimming pools, football cricket and athletic grounds. But the indoor stadium to be commissioned shortly will be a wonder. No university in the country has anything like it. No private facility is comparable and even the governments have never dreamt of anything like it. The complex has five badminton courts, four squash courts, three tennis courts, a basketball court, gymnasiums and a 210 metres walking track. All housed in a four-level air-conditioned building.
Besides being an ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001: 2004 certified University, it is home to many top 10 ranked institutions of India. Manipal University has won the prestigious IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award and International Asia Pacific Quality Award.
