ESCALATORS ADDING TO THE COMFORT OF LAKHS OF PEDESTRIANS 

As part of its drive to turn the national capital a world class city, the Delhi Government has focused in a big way on providing relief to pedestrians. In the last few years several Foot Over Bridges have been built. And now many of them are getting equipped with Escalators. This is part of the vision of Delhi Chief Minister, Mrs Sheila Dikshit, to modernize the city.

These Foot Over Bridges and the ones with escalators have been providing relief to thousands of those pedestrians who have to cross busy intersections or dense traffic corridors in the national capital. They are assured of safety, and the escalators will provide them plenty of comfort as well.

They are assured of safety. They will be particularly beneficial for handicapped people and senior citizens 


The installation of escalators is also aimed at showcasing Delhi’s very systematic and planned modernization drive in time for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games (CWG) in October 2010. They are still being installed after the Public Works Department has carried out a proper assessment of pedestrian requirement. The latest ones will have tubular steel space frame structures that are light weight constructions and aesthetically pleasing. Coloured polycarbonate sheets will be used to cover the stairs.

Escalators that are essentially mechanized moving stairways, will be is immensely useful for handicapped persons, for senior citizens and for those who find it difficult to climb stairs.

So far, according to the Public Works Department of the Delhi Government, 31 FOBs for pedestrian safety have been constructed in the last few years. Of them, 7 are equipped with escalators.

The construction of 26 more FOBs is in progress. Of them, 5 will be equipped with escalators.

The sanction for 15 additional FOBs has been given. Four of them will be equipped with escalators. In addition, 10 more FOBs are at a planning stage.

Major FOBs are located near Shri Venkateshwara College, at the Gurdwara at Nanak Pura at Moti Bagh, Ring Road near ISBT Kashmiri Gate, Maharani Bagh, I.P. Marg at ITO, Mangal Bazaar at Mehrauli Badarpur Road, Ring Road at Mansarover Garden, Ring Road at Wazirpur Industrial Area at Ashok Vihar T Point, Ring Road near Punjab Kesari Newspaper, Vishwas Nagar, Hasanpur Village, Vivek Vihar, Patparganj Industrial Area, Ring Road at Shalimar Bagh, Ring Road at Shri Rama Krishna Puram, Shakurbasti Railway Station. 

On the pipeline are FOBs at Jia Sarai, DDA Flats Munirka, Sangam Vihar, and at the UP Link Road.
