One of the most enterprising and fascinating aspects of the Indian Diaspora is the Little Indias it has created in different parts of the world. Many of us that have travelled around the world may have personally walked through some of these neighbourhoods. Some of us have made it a second home. And some of us regularly drop by to these localities whenever we are in town.
We have featured three such neighbourhoods—in Hong Kong, Toronto and Singapore—and put it on our cover. They are all essentially Indian, and yet each one is different considering that the one in Singapore has a predominantly Tamil flavor, and you’ll find more Punjabis in Toronto than any other community. Hong Kong is a mix. As we surf through the pages, we’ll realize that at the core of every Indian community lies a great drive for enterprise. Until we were colonized, we were among the greatest entrepreneurs in the world, and still are.
As part of our efforts to jointly promote along with the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) the Gadar movement which will have its centennial in 2013, we are carrying an extract of one of the martyrs who fought for liberation and independence from the British. Remember, this was a movement run mainly by Indians who’d gone overseas back in the second decade of the 20th century. It was an unequal battle, but the movement left an indelible mark on the annals of Indian history.
We have some profiles, courtesy our partners, OIFC, the investing arm of the Government of India, and a political interview.
