March 2017 \ Interviews \ Interview with H.E. Mr Gonchig Ganbold, Ambassador
“In spite of distance, we are close to one another by heart”

H.E. Mr Gonchig Ganbold responds to questions from India Empire Magazine...

Already 60 years of diplomatic relationships have been forged between India and Mongolia. Before we reach the 75th year, what are the major goals in strengthening and deepening ties?

Mongolia and India are two of the earliest nations in Asia. Mongolians got acquainted with India ever since the teachings of Lord Buddha prevailed throughout the steppe of Mongolia. The XIII century annals titled as The Sacred History of Mongols (chapter 261 to 264) referred to India as Hindu or Hindustan and the Indus river as Sindhi or a New river.

Deep-rooted ancient ties with shared cultural, spiritual and intellectual legacies bind our two nations. It is of the view that a large number of manuscripts and literatures on our historical ties are preserved in our archives, museums, libraries and research institutions need to be studied. Ancient ties constitute a solid basis for the development of the present bilateral relations and future development of friendship and cooperation between India and Mongolia should be made known to younger generations.

Despite geographical distance we have been intertwined with bonds of history, which turned into solid basis of the state to state relations. Mongolia and India established diplomatic relations on December 24th, 1955. Recently, we solemnly marked their 60th jubilee as year-long event on both sides.

The Governments of Mongolia and India have defined the core principles of their relations and cooperation which enshrined in their Joint Declaration of 1973 and reaffirmed time and again. Since then we have concluded the Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation in 1994 and Treaty on Comprehensive Partnership in 2008 and Treaty on Stratgeic Partnership in 2015 and have agreed to collaborate in all fields. At present over 50 Treaties and agreements are being implemented between our countries. Thus, ties with centuries old history have grown into strategic partnership at this time.
