High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago in India, Pundit Maniedeo Persad, spoke to Editor Sayantan Chakravarty on relations between the his country and India. Excerpts from the interview:
Where do relations between Trinidad and Tobago and India stand today?
Relations are on an upswing. Greater trade and commerce opportunities have developed between the two countries. We are a heavy energy based economy, we are looking at attract greater investment from companies in India.

There is an air services agreement. We are encouraging better air connections between our two countries, and to the wider Caribbean and Latin American community. Jet Airways has shown interest. Essar is establishing its presence in T and T in 2007. Bank of Baroda is awaiting clearance to start its operations. We would leverage diaspora connections, it has started by the visit of Vice President of India to T and T.
The Indian cricket team will be based in Port of Spain during the Cricket World Cup 2007. This should add a significant amount of traffic to your country from India and diaspora countries…
Yes, it should. In New Delhi we are issuing a Caricom Visa for the period January 15 and May 15. Our high commission here is the sole Caricom visa issuing authority in entire Asia. It takes a minimum of 7 days to get a visa.
