DIASPORA ENTREPRENEUR: RAMI RANGER, U.K.
A PLACE IN THE SUN

From beginnings that can only be described as extremely humble, Rami Ranger has made a mark and found a place under the British sun. Not unrealistically, his company is called Sun Mark, then. Each year, his company has broadened its scope of operations, gainfully employed more Britishers and earned valuable revenue in a tough economy in order to soar ahead. The results are such that they have fetched a series of recognitions and awards from the Queen. We profile this enterprising businessman who lost his father while still inside his mother’s womb during the traumatic upheaval of Indian partition

“Be the change you want to see” – Mahatma Gandhi.

As a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Rami Ranger has not forgotten these immortal words and has put them into practice.

He has brought about profound changes in British Society, in terms of business, politics and social cohesion. He is a successful businessman with recognition from Her Majesty the Queen five times, four times for business and once personally for community service and was made a Member of the British Empire in 2005.

Rami’s achievements are even more remarkable given the absence of a rich father or an elite education. Rami was born two months after the assassination of his illustrious father, Shaheed Nanak Singh, www.shaheednanaksingh.com, who was against the breakup of India on the basis of religion and was assassinated by religious fanatics when he tried to save students who were caught up in communal riots, The students were saved though Rami lost his father. He was brought up by a remarkable mother who was a teacher and could not give him financial help but instilled the right values which formed the bedrock of his success.

He now runs two of Britain’s fastest growing companies, one specialising in logistics and the other one in marketing fast moving consumer goods. His marketing and distribution company, Sun Mark Ltd, was awarded a third consecutive Queens Award for Enterprise in 2009, 2010 and 2011, an achievement of which Rami is particularly proud as it is only conferred on the best of British companies and to have been recognised three times in a row is a very rare achievement.

Sun Mark has in just 16 years become a powerhouse in UK exports and will this year achieve sales revenues of over £110 million and market goods in over 90 countries around the world. Sun Mark has just opened a new sales office in Dubai to help service and grow their business in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Its achievements were further recognised by the prestigious business ranking company, Fast Track in association with the Sunday Times, in their Profit Track tables for 2011 proving that Sun Mark has the right business focus in maintaining profitability while aggressively growing its sales despite the very difficult business climate both at home and abroad.

Rami is a firm believer in giving back to this society, from where he has received so much, and does so with the same zeal as for business. He is a founder of the British Asian Conservative Link (BACL) which helps make Asians more publicly and politically spirited and also helps make the Conservative party a truly inclusive one. Before the BACL there was not even a single Conservative Member of Parliament but now there are five. As a result British politics will never be the same again and will be more representative of the present day British society. Rami is also the Chairman of the British Sikh Association www.britishsikhassociation.org which promotes interfaith dialogue for a peaceful coexistence. He has vigorously argued that the Sikhs were created to defend the unity, integrity and the basic human rights of every Indian and not to break her up. When Sikh Gurus never claimed a separate kingdom for themselves, then why should some of his followers have to demand a kingdom for themselves? They cannot be greater visionaries than the one who created the.

As Chairman of the Pakistan, India and UK Friendship Forum he was able to bring two arch rival communities together for the first time ever, anywhere in the world, to celebrate their independence days jointly and in perfect harmony. We now have one Queen, one country and as a result we have become one, says Dr Ranger.

His contribution in politics and society is meaningful and diverse, ranging from organising Britain’s first Hindu Ball which emphasized the contribution of Hindu culture to Britain, to raising money for charities like, Help for the Heroes and Heart and Stroke Research Campaign. He supports and lends weight to many deserving causes in Britain and India,

He is also optimistic for the state of British society and today’s tough challenges. He buys into David Cameron’s vision of “Big Society”, paraphrasing Mahatma Gandhi in saying that, ”whatever we do might be insignificant, but it is very important that we do it.” He believes in all people doing their bit to make a big difference. This time he quotes Edmund Burke and says “the world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing”.

CITATION

Her Majesty is graciously pleased to confer the most coveted award for business, the Queens Award for Enterprise 2011 to Sun Mark Ltd for a third year. It is an exceptional achievement by any company to win such a prestigious award and that too for a third consecutive year 2009, 2010 and 2011.

This extremely rare accomplishment is the culmination of great effort, organisation, and vision by the company which was founded and is led by Dr Rami Ranger MBE FRSA, who has taken the company, in just 15 years, from a start-up business to one which is now recognised all over the world.

This Queens Award for Enterprise symbolizes the strength and credibility of the company, its positive contribution to the British economy and that it is amongst the best of British companies. The company’s sales continue to grow despite the global downturn caused by the financial meltdown. The company’s turnover grew by over 35% last year and is fast approaching £150 million and continuing to grow at 30% even now. It is a considerable achievement by any standard, especially when the company’s business has been affected by the events in countries such as Libya, Bahrain and Egypt.

The company exports British supermarket products to over 90 countries with staggering results and market penetration. Needless to say, due to its export activities, it not only generates wealth and employment for Britain directly, but also helps other British companies grow which are connected with its export activities like transport, shipping and manufacturing. It is fair to state that Sun Mark is an engine of growth for many other British businesses. This year Sun Mark was added to the prestigious Sunday Times Profit Track 100 emphasizing the company’s contribution to the British Exchequer in terms of profitability and taxes.

The Managing Director, Dr. Rami Ranger MBE, is optimistic that his company, which is a leading force in exports, will continue to drive hard and be a recipient for many more such awards for sustainable growth and for excellence. He said that the third award recognizes the company’s ethos of hard work, ethical practices and above all empathy for others.

The company’s motto is, “we only succeed when our customers succeed” and this is the bedrock of the company’s strength.
