In India we are now into NRI Season. The incoming traffic of Overseas Indians to India—and that includes NRIs, PIOs and OCI card holders—will gradually increase from the west and the east until the end of December. Then it will be mostly time to return.

This is a time when the NRI is returning to his roots, connecting with the motherland from which he has been weaned away through his destiny. This is also a time for those who are 5th or 6th generation Indians, domiciled in faraway lands, to explore India and its magic. Many of them cannot find their physical roots, do not quite have an idea from where their ancestors left, and yet are willing to crisscross India to know and tell their children about this ancient land.

The Overseas Indians are true ambassadors of our country. The way they fare and conduct themselves becomes a cornerstone for understanding India better. The eyes of the world may be focused on India, but NRIs are playing a significant role in shaping opinion. The better they fare, the better for India.

On our cover, we take a look at the NRIs who have made news in the past one month. They hail from different communities, different professional backgrounds, but in the context of who they are in the eyes of the world, they are Indians first—Gujaratis, Punjabis, Bengalis, Malayalees, Kannadigas, Maharashtrians or Goans later.

We chose to keep this is a profile-driven issue, focusing more on articles on individuals.

Happy reading.
