VAASTU: MARITAL POSITIONS

MARRIAGE is a divine bond between man and woman and Vaastu Shastra can play an important role in maintaining that bond. I have seen the marriages of even astrologically-compatible couples run into trouble because their houses are not arranged according to Vaastu principles.

The foremost focus of a happy marriage is the couple's bedroom. The south-west corner of the house is the best place for it. Bedrooms in the south-east have ruined many marriages because that is the fire quadrant in Vaastu, which means a couple that sleeps in the area will constantly have heated arguments and fights.

The master bedroom floor should be at least 2.5cm (1 inch) higher than all other floors. If you can't raise the floor, lay down a thick carpet. Couples must not sleep under a beam as vibrations from the beam can cause health problems and create a negative impact on their minds. It is recommended that the couple sleep with their heads towards the east and feet towards the west.

The reverse is the second best position, while the head towards the south and feet north is the last choice. Never sleep with the head towards the north because the magnetic field of the earth lies in a north-south direction – energy levels can be thrown out of balance by this strong field. Sleeping in this direction may cause difficulties in having children. Compass directions are especially important to the female partner, on whom Vaastu places a lot of importance in a marriage.

It is suggested that the first thing she should do when she awakens (before sunrise, if possible) is to take a few steps to the east, and then to the north because the east represents good health and the north wealth for the whole family. The mirror in the bedroom should be fixed on the western wall. Valuables and cash should be kept in the south-west corner.

After the bedroom the most important place in the house is the prayer room, where pictures of deities should always face east only. Another room to consider is the children's bedroom; this should be in the south or west of the house.

There is a saying that the best way to win the love of a man is through his stomach. For this to happen, the kitchen must be in the right place, that is, the south-east of the house. Also, the dining table should be in the north or east of the house; the head of the family should face south while eating. Colours, too, play an important role as they can create different moods. The best colours for walls are light tones, expect blue and grey. Blue, grey and black should be avoided on floors as they do not generate positive energy.

Statues of warriors or images depicting violence and weapons should be avoided because they create anger. Recommended displays are pictures of full moons, waterfalls, scenery, forests—generally, pleasant images are helpful in leading a harmonious life.

On a final note, Vaastu does not recommend sweeping the house after sunset because it will result in sweeping away the positive energy the house has received.
