U. K. based businessman Rami Ranger has won himself another accolade. This time Sun Mark Ltd., the company he chairs, has been bestowed the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2009 at the Queen’s birthday honours list. Ten years ago, the company had bagged the Queen’s award for excellence in exports. The company continues to grow in spite of the global economic down turn, and its annual turnover today is about 60 million pound sterling.

In 2005, Ranger was made a Member of the British Empire for his services to business and to the British Asian community. Ranger’s story is moving. Just two months before he was born, Ranger’s father was assassinated in 1947 while trying to save a group of 600 students at the DAV College, Multan who were protesting the partition of India. His mother arrived in India penniless, having lost her country, her ancestral home and the bread-winner of the family. When in 1971 he moved to the U.K. after studies in Punjab, Ranger worked in the fast food industry before starting a business from a shed. Today he is being recognized for sustaining hundreds of British jobs by creating and running successful ventures. He has also over time displayed admirable social leadership skills, serving a host of societies that foster friendship and better ties among different communities. A story like his is quite inspiring.

As is the story of Pundit Maniedeo Persad who has gone beyond the call of a regular diplomatic job and made himself one of the most known heads of mission in New Delhi. Pundit Persad’s grandfather left the shores of India in the first decade of the 20th century for Trinidad and Tobago, for a better future for his family. Today his grandson has managed to forge very strong links between his adopted country, and the country of his origin in no uncertain ways. The small Caribbean nation is very much in the consciousness of Indian businesses today, thanks to Persad’s tireless efforts at promoting ties. He now prepares to lead the second trade and investment mission to his country from South Asia (having led the first one last year in June), and we thought the occasion was worthwhile to feature him.

Anup Singh Jubbal is another story with a distinction. He has had a successful business career in Canada, and today is sustaining and growing one of the largest eye-care foundations in India through a private initiative. We feature him in our Giving Back to India section.

Happy reading.
