President George Bush’s visit to India in early March was pretty much momentous. It had to be seen and interpreted in the context of history. For decades since India’s independence American policy towards India had been one of neglect. When the Soviet Union fragmented in the early 1990s, things didn’t quite improve. And relations between India and the U.S. chilled when India tested the nuclear bomb in 1998.

But now, in the 21st century, equations are far better. The world’s largest democracy and the world’s wealthiest are willing to do business together, and robustly. Plan A seems to be to focus on wealth generation, Plan B on containing China’s march towards being an economic super-power, Plan C on moving towards sub-continental peace and stability.

The visit augurs well for Indo-American future. Cold War mindsets have been set aside, and a constructive road map drawn up. The easy-to-read cover story this issue has been done by veteran journalist Nitish Chakravarty, who’s written on politics for over 50 years and has been on various Presidential and Prime Ministerial trips across the world.

We have a strong Africa package this time. While contributing editor Anu Biswas has essayed another riveting travel piece, this time on her sojourns through Tanzania, contributing editor Vishal Bhatia hired a guide and visited Sarvodaya in northern Durban, the house where Mahatma Gandhi lived. He also went to Pietermaritzburg.

Our Pravasi Section has gotten stronger with inputs being filed by various associations and organizations from across the world. We hope you like the entire package this issue.
