ENTER DOTBOOM
The double barrel cover story ‘Webmasters’ was a window into two well-managed companies—Naukri and Makemytrip. These two are not just about great timing, they are also about two companies that were built on the Internet pixel by pixel. Today, they are not only well entrenched in cyber space, they also have solid brick and mortar operations. There are other websites that get you jobs other than Naukri, and other sites than Makemytrip that take you places, but these two dominate their respective niches because of one big factor—they have delivered.

Naukri and Makemytrip did not forget a crucial aspect of doing business—don’t be too many things to too many people. Naukri focussed only on jobs and left career advice to the others. So no prices for guessing where the job seekers went. Makemytrip grew on the back of the US-based NRIs taking their holidays in India. For once, the American NRIs did not have to make that trip to that insufferable travel agent downtown. They could book their trip IT-style from their laptops.

Naukri and Makemytrip should now make a bold push into the Western markets. Indian business acumen is unmatched and there’s no reason why these two should not be world beaters. Time to give Monster a big scare.

TEXTILE BOOM
The Ministry of Textile is clearly bringing about a welcome turnaround in the textile sector. Shankersinh Vaghela, it seems, has been rightly proactive and that has resulted in greater investments, more foreign exchange earning, and newer areas of employment in the textile sector. It is great to learn that Indian exports to the U.S. and E.U. have really boomed in the post-quota era.

UNFLAGGING ZEAL
Flag bearer Inder Singh, the GOPIO president, deserves all the praise for his efforts in making the Indian presence felt in the US. However, you guys at India Empire focus too much on GOPIO and its members. I’m sure there are other Indians and their organisations that are also representing Indian communities. I guess they deserve to be heard too.

MAHARAJAH MAC
I’m sick of this airline business. Doesn’t the government know when to stop milking its milch cow. After the politicians have stuffed the rolls with their relatives, they turn a once-proud Air India into a sick airline. Then they proceed to sit in committees deliberate on how to merge it or sell it or downsize it. By then the competition is flying far ahead for the ageing Maharajah to catch up. Hopefully, chairman Vasudevan Thulasidas will do the Houdini act and pull out profits.

BETTING ON INDIA
The investment section was good as it puts everything in capsule form. Since it was obviously a condensed version, it would have helped if the government website had been mentioned.
