ON TARGET TIES WITH SURINAMESE INDIANS IN HOLLAND
Another CISF shooter, Sonia Rana who did India proud at the Games a Rs 25,000 cheque from Patil at a function held at the Home Minister’s New Delhi residence The Government of India is looking forward to sponsoring initiatives to enable Surinamese Indians who live in Holland to trace their roots in India. This was announced during a trip the Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vyalar Ravi undertook to Holland in April. Accompanying the minister was G. Gurucharan, the powerful joint secretary in the MOIA.
The ancestors of Surinamese Indians were taken as indentured labour from India to the Caribbean in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to work in plantations. Many of the descendants of this labour force later moved to Holland. Today they number about 170,000 in Holland.
