Finding a Mini India outside India is always a thrill. Leaving aside nations with Indian majority population, we have pockets of mini India in some of the major cities and towns in the world. These are immigrant bases that have brought together Indians from different parts of India together, and offer a fascinating mix of India in terms of cuisine, clothes, and lifestyle. Singapore has its Little India, London its South Hall, South Africa has southern Durban, Melbourne has Footscray. This issue on the cover we look at one such mini-India, at Edison, New Jersey. According to the 2000 United States Census, 17.5 per cent of Edison's population of about 100,000 was made up of Indian Americans. That makes Edison the municipality with the highest percentage of Indian Americans in U.S. Current estimates suggest that the percentage may have gone up to 33. Edison provides us with fodder to look at various aspects of this Indianization of America, ranging from the finesse in software brought in by the techies, the cricket madness of some of the young to the culinary delights of tikka and dosa. The story is brought to you courtesy SPAN, the official publication of the United States Embassy in India.

Deeply concerning to the world is the proliferating reign of terror unleashed against the Indian community in Guyana. While rapes and robberies are commonplace, what is now getting sustained international attention is the systematic way mass assaults are being targeted against the community. One such assault at Lusignan has left the entire Indian community and civil societies across the world shocked.

Close on the heels of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas—the world’s largest gathering of Overseas Indians—held in New Delhi in January, two more State-centric meets were held in Chandigarh (Punjab) and Patan (Gujarat). We bring you some of the images from these meets, and a few excerpted papers that were presented.

Our investment section gets maximum eyeballs, as it directly concerns NRI interests in India. Very soon, to provide more muscle and content to this area, we will be publishing an NRI guide for the city of Delhi.

Happy reading.
