In a few weeks time, many young people in India will be looking to join colleges in University campuses across the country. While attending college can be a vastly different and entirely liberating experience compared to the more regimented life in school, there is a flip side that girl students will quickly get acquainted to. School environs are more secure, but college campuses are just the opposite with little check on those who enter and exit. The cover story, courtesy SPAN, takes a look at safety on campus for both Indian and American students. It talks about how sexual harassment has turned into a silent epidemic, and more cases being reported in both countries than ever before.

For aspiring women collegians, a word of caution: Savour the fun of being in college, but be wary of stalkers and those who can make life quite miserable inside public transport systems, at cafeteria, and even in the corridors outside classrooms. Report all instances of harassment to college authorities, well known NGOs, parents and guardians. It could help prevent something quite traumatizing later on.

Courtesy New York Times, we have a fascinating piece by Thomas Friedman on two Indians who managed to realize the American Dream, as well as their own. And from the Center for the Advanced Study of India, with whom the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs has just signed a pioneering agreement, we have an article by a visiting fellow on the continuing failure to reform the police in India.

We have articles on social changers and philanthropists who in their own way are making a difference to India after having made their mark in foreign lands.

Also in this issue is an article on how Davender Ghai won a landmark court case in Britain that will allow his family to cremate him on an open-air funeral pyre on his death. As Ghai said aptly, “The case was truly a matter of life and death for me.”

Happy reading.
