ANJUM CHOPRA

Cut  Above

This Delhi girl was born to play-and play hard. Anjum Chopra, the captain of the Indian woman's cricket team, comes from a family of sportspersons. Her maternal grandfather was an Olympian, her brother and uncle played first class cricket, and her mother took part in car rallies. She's a straight talker and exudes the confidence that comes from being skipper.

Anjum spent her childhood playing cricket with her brother and his friends. But it was difficult for her to practice with neither her school nor her college having a team. So she played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi. At the age of 10, Anjum made the under-15 team and was the youngest member of the Indian cricket team. Since then Anjum has been a vital part of the Indian cricket team, playing in the top order, earning herself the epithet Lazy Elegance.

Anjum also plays for Air-India and with her talent and with the scenario for women's cricket looking up in India, she has sponsorships from brands like Reebok and BDM.
Cricket's always on her mind. "It doesn't bother us that women's cricket isn't as popular as men's. If we play well we will be noticed," she says. Under her leadership, the Indian team beat South Africa in 2002, the first ever Test win overseas by India's women cricketers. Anjum's next target: World Cup 2005.
