New Delhi: Zoho’s Chief Scientist and Co-founder Sridhar Vembu has urged Indians living in the United States to return home and contribute to building India’s technological strength, emphasising that the nation’s global standing will depend on its innovation capabilities.

In an open letter addressed to “brothers and sisters from Bharat” in April, Vembu reflected on his own journey to the United States decades ago, acknowledging the opportunities it provided while emphasising the importance of remaining grateful. At the same time, he pointed to shifting perceptions, noting that a growing number of Americans believe Indians take away local jobs.

He observed that Indians in the US often find themselves navigating a polarised political environment, where choices are limited and long-term respect is uncertain. According to Vembu, neither side of the political spectrum guarantees sustained dignity for Indian professionals abroad.

“India’s future respect and prosperity will depend on building technological strength at home.”

Vembu argued that India’s prosperity, security and global respect are closely tied to its technological prowess. He urged successful professionals to return and help guide India’s youthful population, bringing back expertise and leadership gained overseas.

He framed this return not merely as a personal decision, but as a national mission, calling for a sense of purpose rooted in contributing to India’s growth and development. The appeal comes at a time when global mobility is under scrutiny, particularly with pressures on programmes such as the H-1B visa.

Concluding his message, Vembu invited the diaspora to participate actively in India’s rise, suggesting that the next phase of the country’s journey will be shaped by those willing to return and build its technological future.
