California Governor Gavin Newsom’s latest round of appointments to state agencies in May included key roles for Indian American professionals, underlining the steadily expanding presence of the Indian diaspora within California’s public institutions and governance structures. Among the notable appointments was Yogesh “Yogi” Chugh, a business executive from Fremont, who was named to the Structural Pest Control Board.

According to an official statement from the Governor’s office, Chugh currently serves as Executive Managing Director of S5 Advisory, a position he has held since 2013. His earlier career included senior leadership roles at Sony Computer Entertainment America’s PlayStation division, where he worked extensively in customer relationship management technologies and consumer services. Before joining Sony, he also served as a Business Services Manager at the Boston Consulting Group.

The statement additionally noted Chugh’s involvement in community and diaspora organisations, including the Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs association and the Foundation for India and Diaspora Studies. Educated at California State University, San Jose and Delhi University, Chugh represents a growing generation of Indian-origin professionals whose influence increasingly spans technology, public administration, policy and civic affairs in the United States.

The Governor’s office also announced the appointment of Subbarao Mupparaju as Director of the Financial Information System for California, commonly known as FISCal. Mupparaju previously served as the agency’s Chief Deputy Director and earlier held senior technology leadership roles within California’s Housing and Community Development Department, as well as at HP Enterprise Services, IBM and Tata Consultancy Services.

California remains home to one of the world’s largest and most influential Indian-origin populations outside India, particularly concentrated across Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the past two decades, Indian Americans have established a significant presence across technology, entrepreneurship, academia, venture capital and increasingly public institutions, with many now serving on advisory boards, commissions and senior administrative bodies across the state.

The appointments reflect not only the professional success of Indian-origin executives in America’s technology capital, but also the growing mainstream integration of the diaspora into the political and institutional fabric of California.
