Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s engagements in Chicago brought the Indian diaspora, defence technology, tourism and hospitality, and sustainable agriculture into focus, highlighting India’s growing opportunities as a market, innovation hub and investment destination.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman interacted with and addressed the vibrant Indian diaspora community at the Consulate General of India in Chicago, highlighting its role as a formidable force enhancing India’s soft power, global standing and bilateral relationships. The engagement underlined the growing importance of the Indian community overseas in strengthening India’s international connections and contributing to its global image.

FM Sitharaman also highlighted India’s potential to serve not only as a major market but as a global hub for developing, testing and manufacturing autonomous defence systems, drawing on its technological capabilities, skilled workforce and expanding innovation ecosystem.

Defence And Autonomy

The defence technology opportunity featured prominently in her meeting with Mr Brandon Tseng, Co-founder and President, Shield AI. Discussions focused on the company’s engagement with India and opportunities to deepen cooperation in AI-enabled autonomy, unmanned systems and next-generation defence technologies, including R&D, technology development, co-development and co-production.

The Finance Minister welcomed Shield AI’s continued interest in India and highlighted the country’s rapidly expanding defence technology ecosystem, strong engineering and AI talent, and growing capabilities in advanced manufacturing and innovation. The emphasis on co-development and co-production reflects the scope for India to participate more deeply in emerging defence technologies.

Hospitality’s New Horizon

FM Sitharaman also met Mr Mark S Hoplamazian, President and CEO, Hyatt, with discussions covering Hyatt’s continued commitment to India and opportunities to expand its presence as the country’s tourism and hospitality sector enters a new phase of growth.

She highlighted improving connectivity and infrastructure, which are opening new tourism and commercial destinations, with Tier-II and Tier-III cities emerging as important centres of economic activity and travel. The Finance Minister also pointed to growing opportunities in destination-led tourism, including spiritual, cultural, wellness, medical, nature and experiential tourism.

FM Sitharaman encouraged Hyatt to leverage its global expertise and asset-light model to deepen partnerships with Indian developers and investors. She also suggested exploring opportunities for talent development through the National Institute of Hospitality, while identifying GIFT City as a potential financing and treasury hub for Hyatt’s growing India operations.

Agriculture Meets Innovation

In her meeting with Mr Monish Patolawala, EVP and CFO, ADM, discussions covered ADM’s long-standing commitment to India and opportunities to deepen engagement across agriculture, food, nutrition, technology and sustainable value chains.

FM Sitharaman welcomed ADM’s investments in India, including its growing farmer partnerships, engagement with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and establishment of its global technology and AI capabilities in Bengaluru. She highlighted opportunities to strengthen linkages with Indian farmers and expand regenerative and sustainable agriculture, while leveraging India’s capabilities in food processing, innovation and emerging technologies.

Across her Chicago engagements, FM Sitharaman presented a picture of an India whose opportunities extend well beyond its size as a market. Its diaspora strengthens its global reach; its technology and engineering talent support emerging defence capabilities; improving infrastructure is opening new tourism destinations; and its agricultural and digital ecosystems are creating new possibilities for international companies. The common thread is an India increasingly positioned not merely for investment, but for partnership, innovation and value creation.
