Panama Backs India
Indian Parliamentary delegation receives strong diplomatic support from Panama in the fight against terrorism
Panama City: Senior officials and renowned figures in Panama joined a reception hosted by Indian Ambassador Sumit Seth for the Indian Parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on May 29. During the gathering, Foreign Minister Javier Martinez-Acha Vasquez voiced opposition to terrorism and pledged support to India as the Indian team concluded its visit to Central America.
“Our visit concluded with a grand reception hosted by Ambassador Seth for Panamanian influencers and diplomats. The Foreign Minister and his Vice-Minister Carlos Hoyos spoke in solidarity with India, affirming support for our stand against terrorism and deepening bilateral cooperation,” Tharoor shared on X.
As guests posed for photos with the visiting MPs, Tharoor remarked it was “delightful to meet and exchange views” with members of Panama’s diplomatic and civil society circles. “Also at the reception were: Genesis Alonjo, MP (2019-24); Lorena Castillo de Valera, ex-First Lady of Panama; Mehr Eliezer, Miss Panama 2019 and future politician; and two mission-critical women, Kathy Bhiku, prominent Indian-Panamanian connector, and embassy official Milena Alvarado,” Tharoor posted, alongside photos.
In his remarks, Tharoor highlighted key messages India aimed to deliver internationally through the delegation’s visit. The MPs also toured the iconic Panama Canal, once operated by the U.S. until 1999. Panama recently marked 25 years since regaining control of the canal.
“We wrapped up with a quick visit to the Panama Canal—still stunning to see massive ships raised and lowered by 100-year-old technology,” Tharoor shared on X. Earlier, the delegation met with President Jose Raul Mulino at Panama’s Presidential Palace. The President reiterated support for India and condemned terrorism.
