Modi congratulates Merz, both reaffirm commitment to fighting terrorism

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Friedrich Merz, newly appointed Chancellor of Germany, in May, congratulating him on assuming office and reaffirming India’s commitment to the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.

“Spoke to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and congratulated him on assuming office. Reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the Strategic Partnership between India and Germany,” Modi posted on X.

The two leaders discussed trade, defence, innovation, and counter-terrorism. They acknowledged the contributions of the Indian diaspora in Germany and agreed to work closely on regional and global challenges.

PM Modi invited Chancellor Merz to visit India. Merz, a veteran politician from the CDU, was elected by a majority in the Bundestag earlier in May.
