Modi Visits Croatia
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a historic and heartfelt welcome in Croatia during the final leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour
Zagreb: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an enthusiastic and emotional reception from the vibrant Indian community in Zagreb as he began his landmark visit to Croatia — the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister — on June 18.
Zagreb marked the final destination of PM Modi’s three-nation diplomatic tour, which began with Cyprus and continued to Canada for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis before culminating in Croatia. As a notable gesture of goodwill and diplomatic warmth, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic personally received PM Modi at Franjo Tudman Airport with a ceremonial welcome.
“This is a special visit, the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister to a valued European partner. I am grateful to Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport,” PM Modi stated in a post on X.
Croatian Prime Minister Plenkovic remarked that the visit comes at a significant geopolitical juncture, highlighting, “We are starting a new chapter in Croatia-India relations and creating the conditions for strengthening bilateral cooperation in a number of areas.”
Diaspora Warmth and Vedic Spirit
The Indian diaspora turned out in large numbers along PM Modi’s motorcade route through Zagreb. As he arrived at his hotel, chants of “Modi-Modi”, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, and “Vande Mataram” echoed through the streets. Enthusiastic cultural performances—featuring traditional dances, music, and Vedic chanting—created an electrifying atmosphere. PM Modi joined a group of local Croatian enthusiasts chanting shlokas and warmly interacted with community members gathered outside.
This historic visit coincides with a growing Indian presence in Croatia. As of December 2024, there were approximately 17,000 Indians residing in Croatia, largely working in construction, healthcare, hospitality, and service industries on short- and medium-term contracts.
