Engineering India Rises

India’s engineering goods exports have soared 60% since 2014, a key indicator of the ‘Make in India’ initiative’s success and the country’s growing industrial strength, said Union Minister Piyush Goyal

New Delhi: India’s engineering goods exports have surged by 60 per cent since 2014, marking a major milestone for the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said in June. Lauding the sustained export growth, Goyal credited the government’s focused policy measures and industrial reforms over the last decade for propelling Indian engineering products into global markets.

“India on the rise! Since 2014, under @NarendraModi Govt., engineering goods’ exports have surged by 60 per cent, reflecting robust ‘Make in India’ success,” the Minister posted on social media platform X. The rise in engineering exports coincides with steady improvement in the country’s broader industrial performance.

According to the Ministry of Statistics, India’s industrial production grew by 2.7 per cent year-on-year in April 2025. The manufacturing sector, which forms the backbone of India’s industrial ecosystem, saw a growth of 3.4 per cent in April, up from 3 per cent in March.

Key drivers of this uptick included basic metals, motor vehicles, and machinery, with the machinery and equipment segment alone growing by 17 per cent, signaling robust domestic and export demand. Capital goods output — equipment used in industrial and infrastructure projects — surged by a sharp 20.3 per cent, reflecting rising investment and capacity-building trends across industries.

Consumer demand remained resilient, with durable goods output, including electronics and household appliances, rising by 6.4 per cent, indicating sustained household spending. India’s infrastructure thrust further bolstered industrial momentum. The infrastructure and construction goods sector registered 4 per cent growth in April, fuelled by public investment in highways, railways, and ports under national development schemes.

As global demand grows for high-quality, cost-effective engineering products, India’s export performance, paired with improved industrial output, underscores the success of Make in India and reinforces the country’s emergence as a key global manufacturing hub.
