PM Modi and Uruguayan President reaffirm ties during BRICS Summit meeting, push for expanded trade and strategic cooperation.

Rio de Janeiro: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, with both leaders engaging in a wide-ranging dialogue on strengthening bilateral ties.

Discussions focused on cooperation in digital technology, UPI integration, defence, railways, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, energy, and people-to-people exchanges. A central topic was enhancing bilateral trade and expanding the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement to leverage shared economic potential.

Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for Uruguay’s strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack and noted India’s appreciation for Uruguay’s solidarity in the fight against terrorism in all its forms.

This meeting marked another step in India’s outreach to Latin America, a region gaining strategic weight in India’s multilateral diplomacy. PM Modi’s ongoing five-nation tour has underscored India’s push to deepen ties across the Global South, from Africa and the Caribbean to South America.
