Trade Talks Tested
India’s envoy in Washington has intensified his conversations with American lawmakers amid new trade tensions.
Washington (DC): Continuing his high-level engagements with influential US lawmakers, India’s Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra met Representative Pete Sessions to share New Delhi’s perspective on recent developments, notably trade.
“Engaged in a productive discussion with Representative Pete Sessions, Chairman of the House Sub-Committee on Governmental Operations. Briefed him on India’s position on recent developments, including trade, and exchanged views on energy security and the advancing hydrocarbon partnership between our nations,” Kwatra wrote on X.
On August 19, he noted that he had met Representative Marc Veasey and explained India’s stance on ongoing issues. During this dialogue, Kwatra highlighted the critical importance of “fair, balanced and mutually beneficial trade” as essential to strengthening India–US relations.
“Had a fruitful conversation with Representative Veasey, Vice Co-Chair of the India Caucus in the House. Briefed him on India’s position on current developments and underscored the importance of balanced, mutually beneficial trade to strengthen our partnership,” Kwatra posted on X.
Kwatra also held discussions with Representative Michael Baumgartner, outlining New Delhi’s perspective on trade and energy cooperation.
“Had the opportunity to speak with Representative Baumgartner today. Briefed him on new developments in the partnership and India’s views on mutual trade and energy collaboration. Grateful for his strong support,” he noted.
These exchanges assume importance after President Donald Trump announced a further 25 per cent tariff this month, citing India’s continuing import of Russian oil. The move followed an earlier 25 per cent hike effective July 20.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the decision as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable”, stressing that New Delhi’s energy needs and strategic autonomy deserve respect.
