Democracy Bonds Brighten
In a gesture laden with symbolism, Washington reached out to New Delhi on Independence Day, invoking history and destiny in equal measure.
New York: The United States has expressed its intent to walk hand in hand with India to confront the trials of modern times and together usher in “a brighter dawn”, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a message rich with warmth, even as tensions simmer between the two capitals.
“The historic embrace between the world’s largest democracy and the world’s oldest democracy remains profound and enduring,” Rubio said. “Together, the United States and India will confront the challenges of this age and ensure radiant tomorrows for both our peoples,” he added.
This note of partnership comes even as disagreements deepen over tariffs and over President Donald Trump’s proclaimed role in concluding the Operation Sindoor conflict. Rubio underlined the Indo-Pacific theatre, where both nations face shared trials from China.
“Our two countries are bound by a common dream of a peaceful, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific,” he said.
He highlighted joint efforts in technology and industry, though shadowed by Trump’s 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports and a threat of fresh duties over India’s purchase of Russian oil. “Our partnership stretches across industry, sparks innovation, explores the frontiers of emerging technologies, and even reaches into the cosmos,” Rubio remarked.
Another divisive strand has been Trump’s repeated assertions that he mediated peace between India and Pakistan in May—something India insists was resolved bilaterally with a call from Islamabad’s military.
