India and Guatemala move to deepen ties through health cooperation and defence collaboration.

Indian Ambassador to Guatemala Raj Kumar Singh met Guatemalan Minister of Public Health and Social Assistance Joaquin Barnoya to discuss expanding health cooperation. The discussions covered biotechnology, Ayurveda, medical supplies, the Mid-Day Meal Scheme (PM-POSHAN), medical tourism, and affordable medicines under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).

Singh also informed the Minister about India’s plan to donate 650 custom-made prosthetic limbs to Guatemala, strengthening humanitarian aid.

Earlier, Singh met with Guatemala’s Minister of National Defence Henry David Saenz Ramos. They discussed cooperation in space technology, early warning systems, capacity building, defence procurement, and humanitarian initiatives, aiming to enhance bilateral defence ties.

India and Guatemala, which established diplomatic relations in 1972, celebrated their 53rd anniversary of ties in May with a special event in Guatemala City. The event gathered around 200 dignitaries, including diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and members of the Indian community.

The celebration highlighted shared democratic values, mutual respect, and a commitment to global peace and sustainable development.

At the event, the Indian Embassy handed over a confirmation letter to the Guatemalan Ministry of Defence for organising an artificial limb fitment camp. The camp is expected to last about 50 days and will provide over 600 prosthetic limbs to beneficiaries across Guatemala.
