Deepening Democratic Bonds

President Droupadi Murmu’s historic visit to Angola marks a defining moment in India’s expanding partnership with the African continent.

LUANDA: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday reaffirmed that India and Angola are bound by shared democratic values and a common history of anti-colonial struggle. Addressing the National Assembly in Luanda, she hailed Angola as one of Africa’s most vibrant democracies, noting that both nations believe in governance that serves every citizen.

“The relations between India and Angola are based on mutual trust, respect, shared values and development. Our partnership today is multifaceted — extending from global cooperation to grassroots development,” President Murmu said, while recalling India’s unwavering support during Angola’s independence struggle.

Strengthening Economic Ties

Highlighting trade and energy as vital pillars, President Murmu underscored the growing collaboration between the two nations in digital technology, defence, agriculture, and food processing. She also drew attention to joint work under the International Solar Alliance, Global Biofuels Alliance, and International Big Cats Alliance, reflecting India’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy.

Calling 2025 a landmark yeasar, she recalled Angolan President Joao Lourenço’s visit to India earlier this year and emphasised that the two nations are celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations and 50 years of Angola’s independence.

Inclusive Growth and Women’s Leadership

Applauding Angola’s progress in inclusive governance, President Murmu praised the 39 per cent representation of women in its Parliament, describing it as a model for the world. She also cited India’s recent legislation to boost women’s political participation as another shared stride towards gender parity in democracy.

She commended Angola’s achievements in infrastructure, governance, and investment promotion, noting that the nation is emerging as a key player in Africa’s growth story driven by innovation and sustainable development.

A Partnership for the Global South

As the world navigates uncertainty and conflict, the President reaffirmed India’s steadfast commitment to the Global South, stressing that partnerships like India–Angola are crucial to ensuring peace, prosperity, and inclusive growth.

Earlier, President Murmu paid tribute at the Dr. Antonio Agostinho Neto Memorial, honouring Angola’s first President and independence hero, and toured the Fortaleza de São Miguel, which chronicles the country’s long struggle for freedom.
