Diaspora Seeks Stronger Voice

The diaspora can serve as a bridge between India and the United States across technology, trade, healthcare, energy, education and strategic cooperation.

The participants said the objective should extend beyond increasing voter participation. While electoral participation remained an important component of civic engagement, they argued that the community also needed a durable structure capable of engaging policymakers from both parties and advocating on issues affecting Indian Americans as well as the wider American society.

For a community that has established a substantial presence across American business, medicine, technology, education and civic life, the discussion reflected an expanding conception of its role. The emphasis was not simply on participating in elections, but on building sustained relationships with policymakers and contributing constructively to debates shaping the United States and its relationship with India.

Congressman Jim McGovern, a Democrat, represents Massachusetts’ Second Congressional District in the US House of Representatives. The meeting at Shrewsbury therefore brought together local community concerns with a wider conversation about how Indian Americans can participate more effectively in American civic life while continuing to contribute to the India-US partnership.
