Interview with H.E. Mr Oscar I. Martínez Cordovés, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to India
Indian solidarity with the Cuban Revolution is well documented. How would you define present day Cuba-India relations? Do you see them at a high point?
The current relations between the Republic of Cuba and the Republic of India date from January 12, 1960, when both governments decided to establish diplomatic relations. From then till date, exchange and political dialogue have had an upward trend up to the present day. These ties are based on our close friendship, where we unite the history, our common interests and above all the decision of our countries to fight for a multi polar world, for a more just international order and preserve the much needed stability and peace at the global level.
Precisely the recent official visit to Cuba of the President of the Republic of India, Honorable, H.E Mr. Ram Nath Kovind, headed by a nourished delegation, the first visit of an Indian Head of State to Cuba, constitutes an elemental test of the will of both States and Governments to continue to strengthen these relationships. For the Cubans it turned out to be a great emotion that precisely the first stopover of the Official Visit in Cuba was to the city of Santiago de Cuba, to pay tribute to the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz, who was one of the endearing friends of the people and the Leaders of India.
I believe that the welcome to the Honorable President and the talks held with the highest representatives of the State, Government and Cuban people is also a sign of friendship. In the difficult moments of our country against the adverse atmospheric phenomena, Cuba has had the generous hand of the authorities and people of India that has materialized in the shipment to Cuba of medicines, supplies for the health system, machinery and equipment for which we are very grateful.
