India-Cuba Diplomacy Deepens

PM Modi meets Cuban First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez Mario

What kind of investment opportunities exist in Cuba’s tourism sector for Indian companies?

Natural tourism is a key opportunity. Cuba has countless idyllic islands and beaches, ideal for boutique hotel development. Despite the distance, once you’re in Cuba, you can explore the entire country in a week. Our warm people, rich culture, robust education and healthcare systems, and sporting legacy make Cuba a unique destination. Indian investors can play a vital role in developing niche and sustainable tourism ventures.

There are many Indians in the USA, Canada, and the Caribbean. What is your message to them?

Travel to Cuba has never been easier. We now offer electronic visas that can be applied for online. With over 50 international flight routes, including direct options from Toronto and connecting flights via Mexico, access is seamless. Indians in North America can travel freely. Only Cuban-Americans face potential complications due to US policies.

In February, after presenting your credentials to the President of India, you travelled to Kerala. Could you share some key takeaways from that visit?

Yes, Kerala was the first Indian state I visited after presenting my credentials, following an invitation from the Chief Minister, who had previously visited Cuba in 2023. We focused on advancing cooperation in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and higher education. A delegation from the University of Kerala signed MoUs with the University of Havana, exploring joint initiatives.

I’ve also visited Assam—known for its stunning beauty and world-renowned tea—Varanasi, and the Kumbh Mela, which was an incredible cultural experience. Recently, I was in Hyderabad for a Latin America-Telangana business forum. It’s been a rich and eye-opening few months.

What is your vision for strengthening ties with India in the future?

Given our shared history, aligned worldviews, and complementary strengths, I believe our partnership holds immense promise. The goodwill between our peoples is palpable—whenever I introduce myself as Cuban in India, the response is always warm and supportive. To me, that speaks volumes: we walk together in solidarity, and we will continue to do so as we build a more just, inclusive, and cooperative world.
