Paris: The applause arrived in waves.

In Nice, members of the Indian diaspora rose to their feet as Prime Minister Narendra Modi entered the venue. Tricolours fluttered above the crowd and mobile phones lit up the hall as students, entrepreneurs, professionals and families greeted him with unmistakable warmth. Many had travelled considerable distances to be there. Some came out of admiration, others out of curiosity, but all shared the sense that they were witnessing a relationship that has steadily acquired greater depth and significance over the years.

It was an evocative beginning to a visit that would take the Prime Minister from Nice to Evian and finally to Paris, through a programme that combined diplomacy, innovation, business engagement and community interaction. Yet beyond the carefully structured itinerary lay a larger story. France was not simply hosting an Indian Prime Minister. It was providing a stage upon which the evolving character of one of India’s most important international partnerships was being revealed.

For much of the past quarter-century, the India-France relationship has rested upon a foundation of strategic trust that has proved remarkably resilient. Governments have changed, economic cycles have come and gone, and the international order itself has undergone profound transformation. Through it all, the partnership has continued to expand. Defence cooperation remains a central pillar, but it no longer tells the whole story. Increasingly, the relationship is being shaped by technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, education, mobility and the growing influence of a diaspora that serves as a bridge between two societies.

That broader reality was visible throughout the visit. Every stop illuminated a different dimension of the partnership. Nice highlighted innovation and entrepreneurship. Evian underscored India’s growing role in global affairs. Paris brought together technology, business, culture and people-to-people engagement in a way that demonstrated just how far the relationship has travelled from its traditional diplomatic foundations.
