Ceremonial Welcome

Agreements and Alliances

The visit saw the signing of several bilateral agreements spanning energy connectivity, digital transformation, healthcare, defence, and grant-based development assistance. These pacts aim to accelerate collaboration across sectors and reaffirm India’s support for Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic and infrastructural development.

In addition to official engagements, Modi met with senior political figures and dignitaries, underscoring a people-centric diplomacy that goes beyond government corridors.

A Sacred Pilgrimage in Anuradhapura

In a gesture rich with cultural symbolism, President Dissanayake and PM Modi traveled together to Anuradhapura to inaugurate Indian-backed development projects. They also visited the revered Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi temple complex—one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. Modi had previously visited the temple during his trips in 2015 and 2019, further emphasizing the spiritual and civilisational ties between the two countries.

Fishing Disputes and Maritime Diplomacy

A long-standing issue that surfaced once again during the talks was the plight of Indian fishermen detained in Sri Lankan waters. Both sides discussed the early release and safe return of the fishermen and their boats—an issue India has consistently flagged through diplomatic channels.

“The Prime Minister has raised this matter in all recent interactions, including the December 16, 2024, meeting with the Sri Lankan President,” noted Misri.

He also urged the Sri Lankan government to approach the issue as one of humanitarian concern, rather than criminal enforcement, citing the origins of the dispute in the maritime boundary agreements of the 1970s.
