Terrorism, Trade, Tradition
PM Modi’s visit to Croatia marks a powerful confluence of cultural homage, diplomatic partnership, and shared resolve against terrorism
A Gift of Civilizational Significance
Underscoring the deep historical ties between the two nations, PM Modi was presented with a reprint of Filip Vezdin’s Sanskrit grammar, the first printed Sanskrit grammar published in Latin in 1790.
Croatian missionary and Indologist Filip Vezdin—also known as Paulinus a Sancto Bartholomaeo—had studied Sanskrit during his time in India, particularly in Kerala, and played a pioneering role in transmitting Indian linguistic scholarship to Europe.
“This grammar, based on knowledge from Kerala Brahmins and Indian manuscripts, symbolizes our early cultural exchanges,” said PM Plenkovic, who personally handed the reprint to PM Modi.
Also gifted was the book ‘Croatia and India: Bilateral Navigator for Diplomats and Business’ by Croatian diplomat Sinise Grgica, which outlines the full scope and future potential of India-Croatia cooperation.
“The book reflects our achievements and potential. It will inspire the strengthening of future cooperation,” Plenkovic noted.
Diaspora Cheers and Cultural Resonance
PM Modi’s arrival in Zagreb was met with a grand ceremonial welcome at Franjo Tudman Airport, personally hosted by PM Plenkovic—a rare diplomatic gesture. The streets of Zagreb echoed with chants of “Modi-Modi”, “Vande Mataram”, and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” as members of the 17,000-strong Indian diaspora lined the route to greet him.
The Prime Minister also joined in Vedic chanting with local well-wishers and expressed admiration for the strong presence of Indian culture in Croatia.
“The bonds of culture are strong and vibrant! Happy to see Indian culture has so much respect in Croatia,” he shared in an X post. In a separate message, he applauded the Indian community’s contribution to Croatia’s growth, stating:
“They have remained rooted in their heritage and are enthusiastic about India-Croatia ties becoming even stronger.”
