We understand Tunisia is a major exporter of olive oil…

Yes and also dates. But we generally feel Indians are under the impression that olive oil comes only from Italy and Spain. That is not the case since Tunisia has been producing it for more than 2000 years. Last year, we were actually number two in the world in terms of production. Olive oil is very healthy, but I feel there has been some amount of short-sightedness on the part of the Indian decision-makers by hiking taxes on olive oil imports and make it less affordable to all sections of Indian consumers. Every effort must be made to increase the consumption of olive oil in India. We know it helps in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, to mention a few, and in overall increasing the well-being of individuals.
