An Indian parliamentary delegation led by Supriya Sule visited Ethiopia as part of Operation Sindoor to build consensus against cross-border terrorism

Addis Ababa: An all-party parliamentary delegation led by Supriya Sule, MP from the Nationalist Congress Party–Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP–SP), held constructive interactions with senior Ethiopian leaders, parliamentarians, and the African Union Commission as part of India’s diplomatic outreach under Operation Sindoor. The visit reinforced India’s message of a ‘New Normal’ — zero tolerance for cross-border terrorism and a united political front on national security.

The Indian Embassy in Ethiopia said in a statement on X: “The multi-party Indian Parliamentary delegation, visiting Ethiopia from May 30 to June 1, 2025, in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, held fruitful interactions and in-depth discussions with top Ethiopian lawmakers, dignitaries, and the African Union Commission.”

The visit began with a meeting with Adem Farah, Deputy Chairperson of the ruling Prosperity Party, holding the rank of Deputy Prime Minister. The Indian MPs reiterated India’s unwavering and unified stance against terrorism in all forms. Both sides emphasised the urgency of international cooperation, with Deputy PM Farah condemning the Pahalgam attack and expressing Ethiopia’s full commitment to joint counter-terrorism efforts.

The delegation also met representatives of the African Union, exchanging perspectives on combating terrorism. “The African Union’s comprehensive definition of terrorism provides a robust framework for coordinated global responses,” the embassy statement said, calling the dialogue a step toward deeper India-AU cooperation on security issues.

Further, the delegation met Tagesse Chafo, Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives of Ethiopia. Both sides discussed strengthening parliamentary collaboration to advance the message of zero tolerance for terrorism. The Speaker expressed deep sympathy for the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam attack and voiced solidarity with India’s efforts to curb extremism.

During the visit, Indian MPs highlighted the continued threat posed by cross-border terrorism and deliberate attempts to destabilise India’s social harmony. They emphasised that Operation Sindoor was a calibrated, targeted, and proportionate response to the Pahalgam terror attack, reflecting India’s resolve without triggering broader conflict. Ethiopian officials condemned the violence and reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy.

The delegation also interacted with the Indian community in Ethiopia, acknowledging the diaspora’s contributions and urging them to promote India’s civilisational values and unity. The delegation commended their role in resisting divisive narratives and upholding the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

The visit to Ethiopia follows earlier stops in Qatar and South Africa, and included parliamentarians across the spectrum: BJP leaders Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Anurag Thakur, and V. Muraleedharan; Congress MPs Manish Tewari and Anand Sharma; TDP’s Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu; AAP’s Vikramjeet Singh Sawhney; and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin.

Reacting to the Embassy’s statement, Supriya Sule wrote on X: “They reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to combating cross-border terrorism and urged the Indian diaspora to continue spreading this message throughout Ethiopia. #OperationSindoor #ZeroTolerance.” She added: “They emphasised that terror and talks cannot go together — blood and water cannot flow together.”

Sule also stated that the delegation presented a united front, clearly explained Pakistan’s role in the April 22 attacks, and detailed how India neutralised terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir through Operation Sindoor.

Congress MP Manish Tewari noted their meeting with Ethiopian lawmakers on X, highlighting India’s firm stance against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. BJP’s V. Muraleedharan shared that the delegation paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Embassy, reaffirming the ideals of peace and tolerance.

Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin summed up the engagement: “Africa is moving from non-interference to non-indifference in countering terror. Indian delegation & AU officials discuss partnering to counter threats. #OperationSindoor #JaiHind.”

The Ethiopia leg of Operation Sindoor reflects India’s strategic outreach to garner global solidarity against terrorism and strengthen regional partnerships in Africa.
