Space Collaboration
India and Guyana deepen scientific ties with an ISRO-CSIR technology showcase at a major global biodiversity summit.
Georgetown: The Indian High Commission in Guyana organised an exhibition on July 24 highlighting technologies developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The exhibition took place on the sidelines of the Global Biodiversity Alliance Summit in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana.
The display featured advancements in resource mapping, climate adaptation, agriculture, and several allied fields. “The exhibition is organised with support from the Government of Guyana, showcasing our expanding bilateral cooperation in sustainable development and innovation. We would like to thank the President of Guyana for his unwavering support to the initiative,” the Indian High Commission posted on X.
The High Commission stated that the initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India’s growing engagement with the Global South, including Guyana and other CARICOM nations. During his visit to Guyana in November 2024, PM Modi addressed the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit in Georgetown, where he envisioned a multifaceted partnership with innovation as a central pillar. He emphasised collaboration in science and technology, especially in leveraging Indian space technology for resource mapping, climate resilience, and agricultural development, the High Commission noted.
The ISRO delegation is in Guyana to attend the Global Biodiversity Alliance Summit, which seeks to reinforce international commitment to biodiversity conservation. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in space-based applications and scientific research.
The delegation includes scientists G. Srinivasa Rao of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), G.S. Pujar from the Earth Observation and Disaster Management Programme Office, and Sudhakar Reddy Chintala, Head of the Forest Biodiversity and Ecology Division at NRSC.
According to the High Commission, the visit underscores India’s engagement with Guyana in biodiversity conservation, environmental sciences, climate action, agriculture, disaster response, and other critical areas of space-based collaboration.
