Historic Trade Deal

The India-UK pact is being celebrated as a people-first agreement, poised to reshape trade ties and drive inclusive economic growth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 25 lauded the historic India-UK Free Trade Agreement, calling it a transformative step in economic ties between the two nations. Sharing a post by MyGovIndia on platform X, the Prime Minister wrote: “An insightful thread, giving a glimpse of the transformative impact of India-UK CETA…”

The thread, titled “A People’s Deal Begins Now!”, outlined the wide-ranging benefits of the newly inked India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), calling it a “game-changing pact” for Indian farmers, MSMEs, youth, women entrepreneurs, and professionals.

Signed during PM Modi’s landmark UK visit, the agreement marks a major shift in bilateral trade relations and is projected to increase trade by $34 billion annually. Under the deal, India will slash tariffs on 90 per cent of British goods, while the UK will reduce duties on 99 per cent of Indian exports—an easing of barriers expected to improve access and lower costs.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer hailed the pact: “Our landmark trade deal with India is a major win for Britain. It will create thousands of British jobs across the UK, unlock new opportunities for businesses, and drive growth in every corner of the country.”

For Indian consumers, lower prices on imported goods like Scotch whisky, gin, luxury cars, cosmetics, and medical devices are expected. Indian exporters, particularly in textiles and leather, will benefit from zero duties, boosting competitiveness against regional players like Bangladesh and Cambodia.

Crucially, Indian agricultural exports will now enjoy tariff parity with major European players, notably Germany—a significant win for Indian farmers.
