Tricolour Across Continents

From Bangkok to Santiago, New York to Port of Spain, Indian missions worldwide marked the 79th Independence Day with colour, culture, and camaraderie.

New Delhi: Indian diplomatic missions across the globe celebrated the nation’s 79th Independence Day with vibrant events that reflected unity, heritage, and the enduring strength of the diaspora.

In Bangkok, Ambassador Nagesh Singh hoisted the Tricolour at the Indian Embassy before over 500 guests. He read Rashtrapatiji’s address and felicitated diaspora members for their role in helping Indians in distress and in promoting Indian culture. Patriotic music and dance performances set the tone for the day.

In Sydney, Consul General S. Janakiraman unfurled the flag and read President Droupadi Murmu’s message. The cultural programme featured melodious tributes, graceful dances, and a spirited Rajasthani folk troupe supported by ICCR, New Delhi.

In Yangon, Ambassador Abhay Thakur presided over celebrations at India House where more than 500 guests gathered for the flag-hoisting, President Murmu’s address, and cultural performances.

In Manila, Ambassador Harsh Kumar Jain hoisted the Tricolour before 300 guests. He highlighted the newly-declared India–Philippines Strategic Partnership, spanning trade, defence, science, agriculture, space, and people-to-people ties. The festivities included Kathak, patriotic songs, and a lively Bhangra staged by the local diaspora.

In Santiago, Ambassador Abhilasha Joshi hoisted the national flag and shared excerpts from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Red Fort address, highlighting India’s progress and the vision of a Viksit Bharat 2047. Over 300 diaspora members and friends of India participated, with the occasion enriched by Indian cuisine and patriotic fervour.

In the United States, the Consulate General in New York curated a special programme themed Shakti—Divine Energy, bringing together Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, and contemporary performances by acclaimed artists from India and the US. The Consulate also partnered with the iconic 44th Annual Battery Dance Festival, New York City’s longest-running public dance event.

In Houston, Consul General D.C. Manjunath joined elected officials and diaspora leaders at India House, where the Indian-American community turned out in large numbers to mark the day.

In Guyana, the High Commission and Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Georgetown celebrated with enthusiasm as members of the diaspora, students, and businesspersons joined in.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the High Commission in Port of Spain held a flag-hoisting ceremony at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation (MGICC). The event featured the singing of the national anthem and cultural performances reflecting India’s rich traditions.

From Asia to Latin America, North America to the Caribbean, the Independence Day celebrations showcased India’s growing global partnerships and the vital role of its diaspora in preserving cultural identity while strengthening international bonds.
