India Raises Concerns

India has strongly taken up incidents of violence against its nationals in Ireland and Canada with the respective authorities.

New Delhi: India has raised concerns with Irish authorities in Dublin and the Irish Embassy in New Delhi over recent attacks on Indian nationals. The Indian Embassy in Dublin is in touch with victims and providing assistance.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “We have strongly raised this matter with Irish authorities. Both the President of Ireland and the Deputy Prime Minister have condemned these acts. Our Embassy is in touch with victims and community members. We have issued an advisory for nationals in Ireland and hope the situation will settle.”

Ireland’s Deputy PM Simon Harris on Aug 11 condemned the “despicable acts of violence and racism” and praised the Indian community’s “positive contribution.” The meeting followed the July 26 assault of an Indian national in Dublin’s Tallaght suburb.

Meanwhile, India also expressed concern over the harassment of an Indian couple in Peterborough, Ontario, on July 29. A video showed racial abuses and threats by Canadian youths. Police confirmed one arrest on Aug 8, after reviewing footage containing hate-based language.

India said it takes the safety of its nationals “very seriously” and missions are in constant touch with communities and local authorities.
