PM Modi’s Ghana visit aims to boost trade, security, and resource cooperation in West Africa.

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi’s Ghana visit, the first by an Indian leader in over 30 years, has reinvigorated bilateral ties with a strong economic and strategic focus. Ghana sees India as a partner in sectors where it has comparative advantage, notably pharmaceuticals. Over 26 per cent of Africa’s generic medicines come from India, and most foreign pharma facilities listed by Ghana’s regulator are Indian-owned, India Narrative reported.

Security cooperation featured in talks, with Ghana seeking training, equipment, and engagement to counter Sahel threats and piracy. Ghana’s President John Mahama has aligned with India on counter-terrorism, condemning the April 22 Pahalgam attack.

Economic ties are central, with bilateral trade at USD 3 billion and a goal to double it in five years. Ghana enjoys a trade surplus, mainly from gold exports. Imports from India include pharmaceuticals, machinery, and vehicles; exports to India also feature cocoa, timber, and cashews.

India’s USD 2 billion investment spans concessional finance, private capital, and grants across 900 projects. Ghana’s mineral wealth — lithium, gold, bauxite, manganese — fits India’s Critical Mineral Mission.

In Parliament, PM Modi emphasised demand-driven cooperation to build local capacity and opportunity, promoting mutual agency over dependency.
