Relations Continue Growing
India and Malaysia strengthen ties across diplomacy, trade, and strategic cooperation.
New Delhi: Malaysian High Commissioner to India, H.E. Dato’ Muzafar Shah Mustafa, in October highlighted the steady growth in bilateral relations between India and Malaysia, noting that the elevation of ties into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reflects the deepening connection between the two nations. In an exclusive interview with IANS, Mustafa also shared insights into Malaysia’s upcoming Chairmanship of the ASEAN Summit and its significance for India-Malaysia cooperation.
How has the bilateral relationship between India and Malaysia evolved recently?
Our relations have witnessed steady progress, rooted in longstanding historical and cultural connections. The visit of our Prime Minister last year marked a milestone, further strengthening bilateral ties. Elevation into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership underscores the commitment on both sides to deepen political, economic, and cultural engagement.
The 47th ASEAN Summit will be held in Malaysia from October 26. How important is this event?
As the current Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia places great emphasis on inclusivity and sustainability. This summit will be significant not only for ASEAN, but also for dialogue partners including India. Leaders from ASEAN and partner countries will deliberate on future priorities, bilateral cooperation, and regional strategies. We eagerly look forward to hosting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the summit.
Has the US President been invited?
Yes. As a dialogue partner, the US is invited along with all heads of state and government of ASEAN dialogue partners. President Trump has indicated his intention to attend, although final confirmations are pending. The summit will offer opportunities for bilateral and multilateral discussions on regional and global issues.
Could there be a meeting between PM Modi and President Trump on the sidelines?
Leaders attending the summit may take the opportunity for side meetings. While no formal request has been made, Malaysia will be happy to facilitate such an important dialogue if it occurs.
Will cross-border terrorism feature on the agenda?
Certainly. Issues of concern for ASEAN and its dialogue partners, including terrorism, will be discussed. Malaysia is committed to promoting peace, security, and regional stability.
Any proposals on Gaza?
Not at present. While there is no specific ASEAN proposal, Malaysia supports initiatives that promote peace and reconstruction in Gaza.
Indian Navy warship INS Sahyadri recently visited Malaysia. Your view?
Bilateral maritime cooperation is a priority. Ensuring rule of law, stability, and freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific and South China Sea remains essential. Such initiatives enhance defence ties and regional security.
Zakir Naik resides in Malaysia and is wanted in India. Any extradition plans?
Malaysia has a bilateral extradition treaty with India. Zakir Naik’s case is under judicial consideration. Extradition is determined by Malaysian courts based on legal procedures and justifications provided by the Indian government. The Malaysian government maintains neutrality; the decision is entirely judicial.
Will Malaysia extend full cooperation?
Absolutely, through the legal and court process as required under the treaty.
How can geopolitical shifts deepen India-Malaysia economic cooperation?
Being regional and maritime neighbours, Malaysia and India prioritise close political, security, and economic collaboration. India’s growing global influence presents opportunities for partnership. Regardless of geopolitical circumstances, we maintain cordial and close ties, working together bilaterally and regionally.
