India strengthens provincial outreach in Canada to deepen economic and strategic ties.

Ottawa: Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh K. Patnaik, met the Premier of Saskatchewan, Scott Moe, in end November, marking a focused push towards enhancing opportunities across key sectors and re-energising bilateral economic cooperation.

Both sides reviewed significant potential to deepen collaboration between the two partners, particularly in food security, fertilisers, energy and broader strategic cooperation. Discussions emphasised Saskatchewan’s role as a vital supplier of potash and agricultural resources to India.

The Indian High Commission in Ottawa quoted Patnaik acknowledging the Premier’s hospitality, while noting that the dialogue highlighted the immense scope for expanding India–Canada ties by leveraging strengths in critical supply chains. Saskatchewan, he said, continues to be an important contributor to India’s food and agri-linked needs.

Scott Moe shared his optimism on X, saying the meeting reinforced ways for India and Canada to move forward together on ensuring stable energy and food avenues for both nations.

Expanding Energy and Technology Links

Earlier, Patnaik also met Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to discuss energy security, trade, technology collaboration, agriculture, research and the rapidly growing people-to-people exchanges that underpin bilateral warmth.

High Commissioner Patnaik stressed that energy, agriculture, technology and advanced research present a strong basis for expanding cooperation fairly, in a balanced and mutually beneficial way.

Following the engagement, Premier Smith posted on X that Alberta already enjoys strong ties with India and plays a key role in meeting India’s needs for secure energy and high-quality agricultural products. New opportunities in innovation and technology entrepreneurship were also identified as drivers of growth.

She added that Alberta’s vibrant Indo-Canadian community and ongoing investments from Indian companies reflect the scale of potential waiting ahead.

Renewed Political Direction

On November 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian counterpart Mark Carney held talks on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, where India reiterated its ambition to take bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030 — signalling continued interest in economic forward movement between the two countries.
