Heritage Ties Strengthened
India and Indonesia reinforced cultural and developmental cooperation through a series of high-level engagements in Medan and Berastagi.
Consul General of India in Medan, Ravi Shankar Goel, met Karo’s Deputy Regent Komando Tarigan in November to explore shared heritage and collaborative possibilities across culture, tourism, and education. The Consulate stated that the two sides revisited historical Karo–India linkages, including the roots of the Sembiring clan, while identifying areas for deeper cultural understanding and forward-looking cooperation.
Goel also held discussions with Parisada Hindu Dharma Indonesia (PHDI) Karo Chairman Komang Agus Aryawan and members of Wanita Karo Indonesia (WKI) in Berastagi. According to the Consulate, the meeting focused on Karo–India historical connections such as the Sembiring marga and Resi Megit. Both sides expressed interest in expanding cultural exchanges and nurturing community-level partnerships that would preserve shared traditions.
Economic and Regional Outreach
On November 14, KADIN Aceh Chairman Muhammad Iqbal visited the Consulate and met Goel to explore potential cooperation in business, trade, and investment. The interaction highlighted opportunities for enhanced commercial engagement and underlined the relevance of economic diplomacy in supporting regional development.
Shared Civilisational Foundations
India and Indonesia have enjoyed more than two millennia of cultural and commercial exchanges. Epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata continue to influence Indonesian art, folklore, and performance traditions. The Consulate notes that shared culture, colonial experience, and a post-independence commitment to sovereignty, self-sufficiency, and an independent foreign policy underpin the bilateral relationship. Their common struggles against colonialism and shared democratic, pluralist, and progressive values strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.
High-Level Engagements
Earlier this year, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto paid a State Visit to India and attended the 76th Republic Day celebrations as Chief Guest, reaffirming the enduring strength of India–Indonesia ties.
These interactions reinforce both nations’ resolve to advance cultural understanding, economic cooperation, and long-term people-focused collaboration for prosperity.
