INDIA–AFRICA POWER

India and Africa outline a future-ready partnership centred on energy and infrastructure.

New Delhi: India and Africa, representing nearly one-third of the global population, share common aspirations for inclusive, equitable and future-ready development, Power Minister Manohar Lal said, identifying renewable energy, grid modernisation, energy storage, flexibility and institutional capacity as key pillars of India-Africa cooperation.

Addressing the ‘India-Africa Strategic Partnership Meet’ during the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 in March, the minister said power is central to economic growth, dignity and opportunity, highlighting the vision of ‘One Sun, One World, One Grid’ as a transformative pathway for global energy connectivity and shared prosperity.

He underscored the commitment to achieving reliable, affordable and sustainable energy and cited collaboration between Africa50 and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, including the Kenya transmission project, as an example of how innovative financing, technical expertise and public-private partnerships can deliver resilient infrastructure.

Referring to initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening collaboration with Africa, emphasising that India-Africa energy cooperation is not transactional but transformational, rooted in co-creation and long-term partnership.

The meeting reiterated that both sides would work closely in renewable energy expansion, interconnected grid development, energy storage, flexibility solutions and institutional capacity building through structured cooperation.

Mr Shripad Yasso Naik, Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, said the partnership must now move from intent to action, guided by a vision that is inclusive, equitable and futuristic, aimed at long-term impact and community empowerment across India and Africa.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini emphasised sustainable governance and irrigation water management, while Africa50 CEO Alain Ebobisse said Africa is not seeking aid but investment for impact and return, with increasing focus on bankable projects, transmission expansion and private capital mobilisation.
