Coconut Cooperation Deepens
India and Kiribati explore new opportunities for cooperation in copra and coconut oil development.
India and Kiribati have reaffirmed their growing partnership through fresh discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in copra and coconut oil development. The discussions took place in Suva during a meeting in May between India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, H.E. Mr Suneet Mehta, and a Kiribati delegation led by Minister for Tourism, Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives Tangariki Reete.
According to the Indian High Commission in Fiji, the talks focussed on the delegation’s recent visit to India and explored opportunities to further enhance collaboration in agricultural and coconut-based industries. The meeting also reaffirmed the expanding partnership between the two nations across multiple sectors.
India’s diplomatic engagement with Kiribati has steadily grown over the years. Concurrent accreditation for Kiribati was transferred to the Indian High Commission in Suva in 2011, strengthening India’s outreach in the Pacific region.
Last year, India dispatched a six-bedded container-based dialysis unit to Kiribati as part of its healthcare cooperation commitments announced during the FIPIC III Summit. The initiative aimed at bolstering the island nation’s healthcare infrastructure.
India has also extended annual grants for community development projects in Kiribati and regularly offers training opportunities under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme. Diplomats from Kiribati are additionally trained at India’s Foreign Service Institute.
In 2017, India provided a grant of USD 1.1 million for solar lighting in South Tarawa district, benefitting households without reliable access to electricity and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. “Productive discussions were held exploring avenues to further strengthen India-Kiribati cooperation,” the Indian High Commission in Fiji stated.
