Ceremony and symbolism: PM Modi and PM Fico review the Guard of Honour in Bratislava

At the heart of the discussions was a recognition that India and Slovakia possess complementary strengths. India offers scale, talent, a rapidly expanding market and one of the world’s most dynamic digital economies. Slovakia brings advanced manufacturing capabilities, engineering expertise and a strategic location at the centre of Europe. The challenge, and the opportunity, lies in converting those complementarities into practical partnerships.

That ambition was reflected in a series of agreements signed during the visit. The two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, signalling a desire to move beyond conventional engagement and create a more structured framework for cooperation. Agreements covered areas ranging from defence cooperation and digital technologies to labour mobility, quantum communication, cultural exchanges and counter-terrorism cooperation. Together, they pointed towards a relationship entering a new phase of maturity.

The economic dimension of the relationship was impossible to ignore. Bilateral trade has expanded rapidly in recent years, crossing important milestones and generating fresh interest among businesses on both sides. Slovak industry leaders meeting Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence in India’s economic trajectory and highlighted opportunities in sectors including automotive manufacturing, railways, defence, healthcare, energy, information technology and advanced engineering. The recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement has added further momentum, creating expectations that trade and investment flows could accelerate significantly in the years ahead.

Prime Minister Fico was particularly generous in his assessment of India’s economic achievements. Speaking after bilateral talks, he praised India’s progress in digitalisation and artificial intelligence, remarking that the country was ahead of many advanced economies in these fields. His comments reflected a growing perception within Europe that India’s technological transformation is no longer simply a domestic success story but an increasingly important global reference point.
