Denmark Backs India

Former Danish Ambassador Freddy Svane strongly supports India’s Operation Sindoor and urges global unity to fight terrorism

Do you believe PM Modi’s global leadership was reinforced through Operation Sindoor?

FS: Definitely. During India’s G20 presidency, PM Modi elevated the voice of the Global South and facilitated the African Union’s inclusion in the G20. These are signs of a strategic and forward-thinking leader. Operation Sindoor proves that India is setting new red lines in its fight against terror. The global community is witnessing a resolute India, ready to act when needed. That’s a game-changer.

Has Operation Sindoor added to PM Modi’s accomplishments over the past 11 years?

FS: Without a doubt. Sending bipartisan delegations across the globe to rally against terrorism is historic. India has demonstrated that it can lead and take decisive action. PM Modi’s global image has grown stronger, and there’s clarity on who is steering India, the most populous nation and the world’s fourth-largest economy. The Prime Minister is now seen globally as a strategic, visionary leader. It’s unfortunate that this came in the wake of the Pahalgam tragedy, but leadership is tested in such moments—and PM Modi has delivered.

Are European nations aligned with India on countering state-sponsored terrorism?

FS: It’s a complex issue, but recent events leave no room for ambiguity. Europe must adopt a firm stance. Terrorism is a global menace, and we must use all available tools to combat it. I hope India’s outreach helps build a broader consensus. Ultimately, India should propose a global action plan following these visits. That could unify efforts and turn words into action.

Should Pakistan’s remaining supporters reconsider their stance?

FS: Indeed. It’s disappointing but unsurprising that some countries continue to back Pakistan. We must define a unified global position. Terrorism benefits no one. I hope India’s diplomatic initiative helps nations realise it’s time to stop speaking in diplomatic terms and begin taking concrete steps. As a former Ambassador, I hope India leads the way by presenting a catalogue of specific actions.

Your reaction to the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks and also linked to a Denmark terror plot?

FS: I was relieved. It’s a sign that justice can prevail. Terrorists must have no safe havens. India fought for Rana’s extradition for years, and achieving it sends a strong message: justice will catch up with perpetrators, no matter how long it takes. It was a major win.

Denmark is India’s only Green Strategic Partnership partner. What’s the way forward?

FS: I see no limits. It began with my 2011 meeting with then CM Modi. We shared a vision for sustainable growth. In 2012-13, we held workshops in Gujarat on renewables, wind and water. That spirit led to the Green Strategic Partnership. India and Denmark complement each other’s strengths. I visited the massive Adani green energy project in Khavda—it was inspiring. This partnership is crucial not just for our countries, but for the planet. We must tackle the climate crisis together. PM Modi’s visit to Denmark helped advance this vision, and I hope it motivates global action—not unlike the global campaign against terror.
