TRINIDAD TRIUMPH
A landmark visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi deepens India’s ties with the Caribbean nation through vision, values, and vibrant cultural celebration
Diaspora, Devotion, and Digital Diplomacy
In a special outreach to the diaspora, PM Modi extended OCI eligibility to sixth-generation Indians in Trinidad & Tobago.
“You are not just connected by blood or surname—you are connected by belonging,” he said.
He noted the roots of PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s ancestors from Buxar, Bihar, and the spiritual contributions of the Caribbean Indians.
“Your ancestors carried the Ramayan in their hearts. They were not just migrants, they were messengers of a timeless civilisation.”
He brought with him a replica of the Ram Mandir, water from the Sarayu River, and holy water from the Maha Kumbh, symbolising Ayodhya’s spiritual resonance across oceans.
He acknowledged Ram Leelas in Sangre Grande and Dow Village, and added with warmth: “Honestly, there must be something magical in the Doubles and Dal Puri—you’ve doubled the success of this nation!”
Forging a Future with the Global South
Modi addressed Parliament on the challenges facing the world today—from terrorism and climate change to digital disruption and economic disparity.
He lamented that the Global South’s voice remains unheard, calling out broken global institutions: “When the UN turned 75, there was hope. But that hope has turned to disappointment.”
India’s MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), he said, guides its development partnerships—always demand-driven, respectful, and unconditional.
“Trinidad & Tobago is a vital partner in this endeavour,” he said, noting the country’s strategic location as a bridge to Latin America.
A Digital Push for Prosperity
PM Modi welcomed Trinidad’s adoption of India’s UPI payment system, calling it a game-changer for inclusive commerce. “In India, even mango sellers use QR codes. Try paying them in cash—they’ll ask for UPI!”
He invited Trinidad to join hands with India on AI tools and digital innovation and pledged further support in agriculture, horticulture, and food processing.
A Bond Beyond Borders
From Ayodhya to Arima, from the ghats of the Ganga to the Gulf of Paria, Modi reaffirmed that the India–Trinidad bond is both ancient and future-facing.
He recognised contributions of Basdeo Panday, Rudranath Capildeo, Sundar Popo, Darren Ganga, and Sewdass Sadhu, and hailed the diaspora’s journey from struggle to strength.
“Our bond goes beyond geography and generations,” the Prime Minister said in his closing remarks. May our bonds grow ever deeper, and our dreams ever higher.”
