“TIMOR-LESTE AND INDIA DEEPEN RELATIONSHIP”
H.E. Mr Karlito Nunes, Ambassador of Timor-Leste to India, speaks with Bula Devi, Consulting Editor (International Affairs), India Empire, against the backdrop of steadily growing bilateral ties. Their discussion highlights trade, ASEAN integration, investment opportunities, and cultural linkages that bind the two nations.
Timor-Leste shares cultural links with India through history and faith. How do you see this soft power shaping the relationship?
Our cultures have long interacted through shared traditions, and faiths, particularly Catholicism and Indo-Malay influences. Timorese people are increasingly aware of Indian cinema, yoga, and cuisine. These cultural overlaps create natural warmth.
We would like to see stronger exchanges in the arts, film, education, and festivals, in both countries. Soft power is a bridge that strengthens political and economic ties.
What role can media and cultural exchanges play in building awareness between the peoples of India and Timor-Leste?
Media and culture are vital. In Timor-Leste, we look forward to Indian cultural festivals, film screenings, Bollywood shoots, and educational programmes through the new embassies and media partnerships. These exchanges will serve as cultural bridges, complementing trade and technology cooperation between India and Timor-Leste.
How do you assess the role of the diaspora, if any, in strengthening India–Timor-Leste ties?
Indian professionals in healthcare, education, and IT are already contributing in Timor-Leste. They serve as bridges of trust and understanding.
Going forward, even a modest increase in the Indian community in Timor-Leste can help seed stronger commercial and cultural links.
