BOOKS, BONDS, AND FOOTBALL
When Argentina was announced as the Theme Country for the 2026 Kolkata International Book Fair, it felt like the continuation of a love story that began a century ago. For Kolkata, this isn’t just about books and literature—it’s a homecoming of shared emotions. The connection between the City of Joy and the Land of the Pampas runs deep, spanning poetry, passion, and football. From Rabindranath Tagore’s friendship with Victoria Ocampo to Maradona’s magic and Messi’s mastery, Kolkata’s affection for Argentina has grown into something rare and beautiful.
It all began in 1924, when Rabindranath Tagore, weary from illness, travelled to Argentina for rest and renewal. There, he met Victoria Ocampo, the distinguished Argentine writer, critic, and founder of Sur magazine. Ocampo hosted the Nobel Laureate at her villa in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires, and introduced him to the Argentine literary world. Their friendship, documented through letters and essays, became one of the most extraordinary cultural exchanges of the twentieth century. Ocampo’s translations of Tagore’s works opened a new literary window between Bengal and Latin America—planting the first seeds of an enduring relationship between Kolkata and Argentina.
That bond, born in the quiet of literature, would later find its rhythm in football. When Diego Maradona visited Kolkata in December 2008, the city turned into a sea of blue and white. Tens of thousands thronged the streets to greet him, waving Argentine flags and chanting his name. His warmth, humility, and connection with the people of Kolkata made the visit unforgettable. A few years later, in September 2011, Lionel Messi led Argentina against Venezuela in a friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium, where over 120,000 fans witnessed their footballing heroes in action. The emotional energy that night was not just about sport—it was about kinship.
As H.E. Mr Mariano Caucino, Ambassador of Argentina to India, recently observed, Kolkata’s affection for Argentina “goes far beyond football—it is a sentiment rooted in shared cultural and emotional history.” His remarks came as Argentina confirmed its participation as the Theme Country at the 2026 Kolkata International Book Fair, marking a full circle in this century-old relationship. From Tagore’s quill to Messi’s feet, the Argentina–Kolkata connection continues to thrive—built on admiration, emotion, and the enduring dialogue between the Ganges and the River Plate.
